Ridin’ Shotgun With You

Ridin' Shotgun with You
Kevin C. Moore

"For Song #10, I felt led to write something more personal — something that might help me heal. This song returns to a tender part of our Teri Trial, but it also explores new territory: it’s written and sung in a female voice, from the imagined perspective of my wife, Teri. She can no longer communicate clearly, but after 50+ years of her ridin’ shotgun with me, I confidently know her heart.

I’ve quietly feared that the music we loved — the golden oldies we sang together for decades — might become too painful to hear after she’s gone. Our shared soundtrack and air guitars and dashboard drums are woven into every mile of our life together.

I also wrote this song to honor her selflessness. Even in her suffering, I can imagine her trying to comfort me not herself. What a woman she was! Verse 3 captures that spirit:

“The doctors say the road is long, but don’t lose heart — He lifts you up…”

Her message would be simple: don’t worry about me. I’m safe with the Lord. Just try to picture me still ridin' shotgun and cuttin' up with you. Keep trusting the Lord like you always do. You’ll see me again — I just arrived home first.

As always, the song ends with my trademark hope. i.e., eternal perspective, giving all praise and glory and thanks to God. The twist in the song reveals its truth in the Song's Bridge and Final Chorus: for fifty years, we thought we were ridin’ shotgun together. But now we see that God was with us the whole time. WE were ridin’ shotgun with Him!!” - Kevin C. Moore

Ridin’ Shotgun With You

Written from Teri’s voice — by Kevin C. Moore (August 27,2026)

VERSE 1

Fifty years of ridin’ shotgun with you, Every sunrise felt brand new. We chased our dreams on borrowed time, Laughin’ hard and livin’ fine. You’d tap the wheel and drum the dash, Sing offkey and make me laugh. Those miles were ours, just me and you, Two hearts steady, strong, and true.

CHORUS

Fifty years of ridin’ shotgun with you, Every mile we traveled, every dream we grew. Fifty years of ridin’ shotgun with you, And I’d do it all again, because our love was true.

VERSE 2

We built a life on simple things, Kids and bills and wedding rings. You worked hard to lift us high, I kept the home and held the line. We lived our vows through thick and thin, Two souls woven, woven in. A team of two, one heart, one view, Fifty years of me and you.

CHORUS

Fifty years of ridin’ shotgun with you, Every mile we traveled, every dream we grew. Fifty years of ridin’ shotgun with you, And I’d do it all again, because our love was true.

VERSE 3

The doctors say the road is long, But don’t lose heart He lifts you up. When old songs play and memories rise, Let your tears fall — that’s no surprise. But picture me sittin’ beside you still, A gentle whisper when nights turn chill. Trust the Lord like you always do, I’m safe with Him, and I’m near to you.

BRIDGE

Dear Lord, thank You for the life we knew, For every joy You carried us through. We see it now — the whole ride long, You held our hearts and made us strong. We thought I rode beside him true, But all along we rode with You.

FINAL CHORUS

Fifty years ridin’ with You, Lord. Every mile You carried us, every grace You grew. Fifty years ridin’ with You, Lord. Now we’re home at last — and our love is new.

OUTRO

Soft acoustic + piano fade.
